Obituary


Annette Barnhardt Strickland Jackson, 89, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 27, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, North Carolina, following a brief illness. At the time of her death, Annette was a resident of Twin Lakes Retirement Community in Burlington.

The daughter of Terah and Marvin Strickland, Annette was born on June 30, 1931 and grew up on her family’s farm in Cumberland County, NC. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1953 and worked as a reporter for newspapers in Greenville, NC and Raleigh, NC prior to several years as a Social Worker in Raleigh and later in Asheboro, NC where she retired from the Randolph County Department of Social Services.

Annette was active in the Presbyterian Church throughout her adult life and served in Women’s Circle, Choir, Sunday School, and in the Children’s Ministry at First Presbyterian Church in Altavista, VA. during her family’s seven years there. In 2001 she was honored with a Life Membership Award from the Presbyterian Women of First Presbyterian Church in Asheboro. She joined First Presbyterian Church of Burlington in 2006.

Annette was pre-deceased by her husband of 53 years, Harold Jackson. She is survived by her daughter Mary Anna J. Marley and husband Brian Marley of Charlotte, NC and by her daughter Susan J. Phillips and husband Jim Phillips of Greensboro, NC and by grandchildren Thomas Marley of Charlotte, Jackson Marley of Atlanta, GA, Alex Marley of Charlotte, Amanda Marley of Chicago, IL, Caroline Phillips Janes and her husband Lex Janes of Raleigh, Haley Phillips of Durham, NC, and Katherine Phillips of Washington, DC, and by her great grandson Nate Janes of Raleigh. She is also survived by her sister Melba Hales, 95, of Sanford, NC.

Annette was blessed with enduring friendships from her years at UNC-G, her work life, Harold’s work life, and her neighbors and church families in Altavista and Asheboro.

A private service in celebration of Annette’s life will be held on May 7 in Burlington. A private interment will be held at a later date at the Old Bluff Presbyterian Church in Cumberland County, NC where Annette and Harold were married on June 9, 1954.
