Alice Capell Mann

Alice Capell Mann, 92, of Burlington, North Carolina passed away peacefully on July 21, 2017 at The Village at Brookwood. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 29th at 2 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Burlington. Visitation will follow the service.

Born in Easley, SC, Alice was the daughter of the late Sam O. Capell and Lillie Pearl Knox Capell. A 1945 graduate of Winthrop University, she taught home economics for a brief period in Campobello, SC. She married Joseph Griffin Mann in 1946, worked at MIT while he pursued his master’s degree in electrical engineering, and upon returning to South Carolina, she was a homemaker and dedicated community volunteer in Greenville and later in both Burlington and Winston-Salem, NC.

Known for her infectious smile, Alice never met a stranger. She thrived on the success of her husband and children and, most recently, her grandchildren.

Alice was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Burlington and was active in numerous church circles, book clubs and bridge clubs while living in Burlington both in the 1960’s and again more recently when she moved back after her husband’s death.

Surviving are a daughter Cheryl (Cherry) Mann Callahan and husband Mike of Greensboro, NC; two sons, Alfred (Al) Lewis Mann of Greensboro, NC. and Robert Capell Mann and wife Deborah of Easley, SC; a sister Carol Newsom (Raymond) of Greenville SC, and five granddaughters – Megan Callahan, Kathleen Callahan, Lydia Mann, Alice Mann, and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Mann – along with many nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Alice.
