Victor Eugene “Pete” Norwood, 93, of Burlington, died Sunday, August 13, 2017 at the Hospice Home in Burlington.

A native of Chatham County, Mr. Norwood was the husband of Doris Foster Norwood, whom he married February 24, 1952, and the son of the late James Alexander Norwood and the late Myrtle Harris Norwood.

Mr. Norwood retired as a First Sergeant with the NC Highway Patrol on March 31, 1985. Mr. Norwood begin his career with the Highway Patrol on November 1, 1947 and was a member of the second State Highway Patrol Basic School class of 1947. This class would take on the designation as “The Best of “47”. He served as a Patrolman in Yanceyville, Corporal in Alamance County (this rank was later changed to Line Sergeant), First Sergeant in Sanford and then he took a lateral transfer back to Alamance County before his retirement, March 31, 1985.

He was faithful to his friends and loved Shamrock Golf Course and his fellow golfers. He enjoyed his meetings with fellow retirees and talking about “old times”. He especially enjoyed the annual reunions with his “Best of “47’ class members, of which there are four surviving.

Mr. Norwood was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist in Chatham County and attended the First Baptist Church of Graham where he enjoyed worship and fellowship with the church family.

Mr. Norwood was a member of the Retired North Carolina Highway Patrol Association and the Caswell Brotherhood Masonic Lodge #11 AF & AM.

In addition to his wife, Doris, of the home, Mr. Norwood is survived by his sister-in-law, Betsy Foster Webster, of Orlando, Florida and nieces and nephews aplenty that loved him dearly.

Mr. Norwood was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathryn “Katie” Norwood and Reggie N. McLelland (D. Marsh McLelland) and three brothers, Max Norwood (Helen), Richard Norwood (Sue) and Lamont Norwood (Blanche).

The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 15, 2017 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at the Rich and Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory in Graham. Other times they will be at the residence.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 16, at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Graham. Officiating will be the Rev. Travis Russell. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park. Members of the Law Enforcement community are asked to sit together at the service.
