Robert Luther Saffelle, Jr., 86, of Burlington died on Sunday, July 23, 2017. Originally from Emporia, VA, he was the son of the late Dr. Robert Luther Saffelle and Virginia Vincent Saffelle. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Islin Saffelle; son Robert Nelson Saffelle and wife Constance Hall Saffelle of Richmond, VA and their children Elizabeth Hall Saffelle and Katherine Virginia Saffelle; and daughter Ginger Saffelle Elliott and husband John VanTuyl Elliott of Winston-Salem, NC and their children Ashley Elizabeth Elliott, Anna Virginia Elliott, John Robert Elliott and Mary Elizabeth Elliott.
He is also survived by his sister, Patsy Saffelle Ferguson, of Emporia, VA and predeceased by his sisters, Bette Saffelle Milam and Virginia (Ginger) Vincent Saffelle.
He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1955, where he was captain of the tennis team and a member of Theta Chi fraternity. He was a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps., stationed in Quantico, VA. He started his 35-year career with Wachovia Bank and Trust Company in Winston-Salem, NC, transferred to Salisbury, NC and then to Burlington where he served as City Executive for the Burlington and Alamance County offices. He was a 1974 graduate of the Executive Program of Professional Management Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After retiring from Wachovia in 1989, he served as Treasurer of Carolina Biological Supply Co. until 1994.
He was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Directors of Alamance County Hospital, the Burlington YMCA and the Burlington-Alamance County Merchants Association. He also served as President of the United Way-Burlington/Alamance County, the Cherokee Council-Boy Scouts of America and the Alamance Country Club. He received the Kiwanis Club Citizen of the Year award and the Silver Beaver award from the Boy Scouts of America, the highest volunteer award in scouting.
The family wishes to thank the many caregivers, including the private nurses and those from Home Instead Senior Care and Hospice/Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, for their heartfelt care and support. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017, at Front Street United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. A private burial for the family will be held at Alamance Memorial Park prior to the service.
