Robert (Bob) Louis Holland Sr.

November 25, 1937 ~ June 24, 2017 (age 79) 79 Years Old

Mr. Robert (Bob) Louis Holland, Sr, 79 of Burlington, NC passed away peacefully on June 24, 2017. A native of Norfolk, VA, Bob graduated from the College of William and Mary. Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Army where he earned numerous medals as an expert sharp shooter. His professional career was with Bell Telephone Labs in the Ocean Systems Division and he retired from AT&T. Bob was a member of Alamance Lutheran Church where he formerly served as Comptroller.
When Bob was in college, he worked summers with his father at Norfolk & Western Railroad which initiated his love and collection of Lionel trains. A train enthusiast his whole life, he and his wife Kaye, who were married in Breckenridge, Colorado in 1996, took the steam engine excursion through the Shenandoah Valley years ago.
Bob pursued a lifelong love of boating and fishing with his fishing buddies at Wrightsville Beach. He angled for the big one his entire life and was quite successful at it as is evidenced by his many tournament wins. He had a deep love of all things coastal, and he and Kaye enjoyed their home away from home at Wrightsville Beach. Bob loved to tinker—he could repair or duct tape anything together and proudly referred to his projects as “putting his Rube Goldberg spin on them.”
A lover of nature, he enjoyed feeding the wildlife and fish in his little piece of heaven on Lake Mackintosh, and a walk through the woods with his dad’s old, worn walking stick was a great afternoon for him. Other interests included hunting, gardening and NASCAR. Bob had many dedicated friends and family who made his life comfortable and contributed to his health and well-being—Teresa Langione, Mitchell Fox of Hospice, and friend Leroy Baker were central to his comfort and care.
Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He is survived by his son Robert Louis Holland, Jr (Melissa), sister Sarah Louise Holland of Chesapeake, VA, granddaughter Hunter Dawn Holland, great grandson Wesson Holland, step grandson Ryan Adkins (Lauren), step grandchildren Riley, Alex, Noah and Amelia Adkins, niece Elizabeth Lee Larmour and great niece Haley Bauman (Tom), his lifelong friend and first cousin Myron Spring (“Junior”).
He was preceded in death by his parents Mills Louis Holland and Roberta Land Holland and grandson Robert Wesley Holland.
The family will receive friends at Rich & Thompson on Tuesday, June, 27 at 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. and graveside rites will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Alamance Memorial Park with full military honors.
Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance/Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
