Millis Barnes Wright

Mr. Millis Barnes Wright, 96, of Elon passed away at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Friday, February 9, 2018.

He was born in Pike County, KY on April 5, 1921 to William McKinley Wright and Marida Jane Wright, both deceased. He was survived by his beloved wife Doris of 71 years; son, Michael Keith Wright and wife Mary Ann Wright of Mt. Olive, NC; and grandson, Benjamin Keith Wright and wife Stephanie of Austin, TX.

He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Alan Wright; two brothers Willis Wright and Dennis Wright; and two sisters Mae Jones and Mary Ellen Beauchamp.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Graham, N.C. and was active as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, a Pearl Harbor survivor and served two tours of duty in the Asiatic-Pacific theater during the war, as a Radio Gunner on a Douglas Dauntless dive bomber. He was awarded the Air Medal with a gold star in lieu of a second Air Medal for thirteen strikes over enemy territory. In addition, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious service.

Mr. Wright was a graduate of Clemson University and retired from the N.C. Agriculture Extension Service. He was a member of the N.C. Government Employees Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Detachment No. 1209 of the Marine Corps League.

Services will be conducted at the First Baptist Church, 224 North Main Street, Graham NC on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. by Rev. Travis Russell. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 3 until 4 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at Powell Cemetery in Fair Bluff, NC on Tuesday, February 13, 2018.
