Mildred Jacqueline “Jackie” Connor of Burlington, N.C. died Monday, June 12, 2017 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Jackie was born on November 10, 1926 in North, S.C. She was the wife of the late Lawrence D. “Larry” Connor, Jr. and the daughter of Earl A. Sharp and Llewellyn Lucas Sharp, both deceased. She grew up in North, S.C. and graduated from North High School as Valedictorian of her class. She later graduated from Draughn Business College in Columbia, S.C. having majored in accounting.

Jackie’s professional career included Administrative Secretary with the Augusta-Richmond County Planning Commission and Brook-Hancock-Jefferson Interstate Regional Planning Commission in Weirton, WV; Administrator for Burke County Hospital, Waynesboro, GA; and most recently as Administrative Secretary with the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce. She left public employment to become a caregiver for her mother for 16 years.

Jackie was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter in Burlington and had served as usher, church school leader, member of the funeral choir, Mature Voice Senior Group and Standing Property Committee. Jackie and Larry spent numerous years caring for the gardens and grounds at the church. She also enjoyed her many years of fellowship with her church family whom she loved dearly.

Jackie was a Master Gardener volunteer with the Cooperative Extension Service and a volunteer with Alamance County Meals on Wheels. She was also a member of the Alamance County Cattlemen’s Association. Jackie’s passion was gardening and tending her many animals with her husband on their farm, The Diamond LJ, in the Union Ridge community.

Jackie’s family held a special place in her heart. Survivors include her four children, Lawrence William Connor (Gail) of Monck’s Corner, SC, Karen Gallo of Liberty, SC, Pamela Cooke (David) of Greensboro, NC and Sandra Hightower (Art) of N. Charleston, SC; nine grandchildren, Bonnie Brewer (Todd), Sondra Meddinger (Clayton), Christopher Connor, Lawrence Connor, Kelley Gallo, Erin Long (Andrew), Jason Cooke, Arthur W. Hightower, Jr. and Daniel Hightower (Brianna); six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Miriam Riley of Lynn Haven, FL; three nieces, Susan Guy, Beverly Gregory (Irvin) and Cynthia Pitts; three nephews, Alan Connor (Ramona), Dana Riley (Sherry) and Jeff Jones; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Jones.

The family will receive friends in the church parlor of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter on Friday, June 16, 2017 from 10 until 10:45 a.m.

A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter on Friday, June 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., conducted by The Rev. Adam J. Shoemaker. Interment will follow in the memorial gardens of the church. A reception will follow in the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, for the Cemetery Grounds, 320 East Davis Street, Burlington, NC 27215.
