Hugh Allen Gray passed away peacefully on Thursday surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Lamar, South Carolina to Edgar Allen Gray and Nan Lindler Gray. Hugh was the youngest of four children – including two brothers, Maurice and Louis and one sister, Louise, all of whom are deceased.

After graduating from Lamar High School, Hugh moved to Newport News, Virginia and enrolled in the Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School. Upon graduation, Hugh served in the Army Air Corps for two years. He was assigned to the 20th Air Force Group as a Radio-Operator-Mechanic on a B-29 Super Fortress in the Pacific Theater. After the surrender of Japan, Hugh returned to the states and married Mamie Evelyn  Gause. The couple moved to Columbia, South Carolina where Hugh enrolled in the University of South Carolina, School of Engineering.

Following graduation, Hugh accepted a job with Western Electric Company in Burlington, North Carolina. He worked for Western Electric and other AT&T companies for thirty-two years before retiring in 1984.

During his thirty-two years with AT&T, Hugh and Evelyn had three sons: Michael, Kevin and Timothy. Michael married Sharon Kemp and they had a son, Jonathon and a daughter, Alyssa and two great-grandchildren, J. J. and Jayne. Kevin married Sara Greer and they had two sons, Ryan and Sam. Following, Evelyn’s passing in 2000, Hugh married Clare Gause York in January of 2002.

Hugh was an active member of First Baptist Church of Graham for sixty years; serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and usher captain. He and his family love the Lord and his Church has a very special place in their hearts.

Following Hugh’s retirement, he served as an active community volunteer. He assisted with the American Red Cross blood mobile program for eight years, serving at most blood drives across Alamance County as well as personally contributing sixty-five pints of blood. He delivered Meals on Wheels at least twice a month for thirty years. He also served on the City of Graham Appearance Commission for a number of years. When Hugh was not busy volunteering, he enjoyed taking care of his home and yard. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
