Enid Lamar Ledbetter

Enid Ledbetter, 93, passed away peacefully in Burlington, North Carolina on January 7, 2018.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Bennett Ledbetter III, her daughter Cynthia Lamar, and her grandson, Charles Bennett (Henry) Ledbetter V.

Enid Lamar Phillips was born November 22, 1924, in Lexington, North Carolina, the fourth child of five of Ora Huckabee and Wade Hampton Phillips. She married Charles on September 6, 1947, at First Methodist Church, Lexington, North Carolina. They were the parents of three children: Charles Bennett Ledbetter IV (Lisa) of Kansas City, Missouri; Wade Hampton Phillips Ledbetter (Pamela) of Elon, North Carolina; and Cynthia Lamar Ledbetter. Mrs. Ledbetter is survived by four grandchildren: Leigh Anne Hennecy (Chip) of Aynor, South Carolina; Phillips Matthew Ledbetter (Jennie) of Gibsonville, North Carolina; Caroline Clark Ledbetter of Helena, Alabama; and Elizabeth Holley Ledbetter (Tony Lilly) of Ann Arbor, Michigan; and six great-grandchildren, Summer, Bailey, Timmy, Kai, Jax, and Jet. She is also survived by her wonderful sisters-in-law Katherine Brown of Arlington, Virginia and Cora Pitts of Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as fifteen nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Lexington High School in 1943, Enid attended Reed College of Portland, Oregon, for two years and graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. She and Charlie began their marriage in Polkton, North Carolina, and relocated to Burlington in 1950. Much of her younger life was spent as medical technologist for Alamance County Hospital and then later for Burlington Memorial Hospital.

Enid and Charlie were residents of Burlington for many years where they enjoyed raising their children as well as golf, swimming, gardening, bridge, many family vacations, football games, and close friends. Like her father Enid was an avid reader all her life and loved historic novels, as well as tennis, Carolina basketball, and robust conversations regarding current events and politics. She followed the activities of her grandchildren closely and was always there to provide an encouraging word. After she lost her beloved husband, Enid cherished her memories and especially her independence, which she retained for almost all of her long life. Her family will remember the energy, animation, and resolve of Enid’s last years, and her thoughtful kindness for all of them.
